Mistley/ Manningtree - A brief history

Manningtree is a small town located in Essex, England, with a rich and fascinating history. Its origins can be traced back to the Roman period, when a settlement known as "Mammingetre" was established in the area. The name Manningtree is believed to derive from this early settlement.

During the medieval era, Manningtree developed as a market town, thanks to its strategic location near the River Stour. The town thrived as a trading hub for agricultural produce and became known for its weekly market, attracting merchants and locals from surrounding areas.

In the 17th century, Manningtree gained notoriety for its connection to one of the most infamous episodes in English history—the witch trials. The area, along with neighboring villages such as Mistley and Lawford, witnessed a wave of witchcraft accusations and trials. The trials in Manningtree were particularly notorious, with several women accused of practicing witchcraft and subsequently executed. The events of the witch trials left a lasting impact on the town's history and folklore.

As time passed, Manningtree continued to develop as an agricultural and industrial center. The growth of the railway network in the 19th century further enhanced the town's accessibility and contributed to its economic prosperity. Manningtree became an important transportation hub for goods and people, connecting the region to larger urban centers.

In the present day, Manningtree retains its charm as a small market town with a population of around 9000 residents. Its historic character is preserved through the presence of several well-preserved buildings from different eras, including timber-framed structures and Georgian houses.

The town's location near the picturesque River Stour and the surrounding countryside also makes it a popular destination for visitors interested in exploring the natural beauty of the area. Manningtree continues to be a vibrant community, with local businesses, shops, and amenities serving both residents and tourists.

Overall, Manningtree's history is marked by its ancient origins, involvement in the witch trials, and its growth as a market town and transportation hub. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and heritage of the region.

THE BIJOU

Right outside our balcony, is the wreck of a boat called The Bijou.  The Bijou was carrying a cargo of maize when it arrived in Mistley on 8th June 1940.  She was still moored up in Mistley when on the evening of July 7, 1940, during the height of the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe targeted Mistley as part of their broader assault on British coastal defenses. A squadron of German bombers approached the village under the cover of darkness, dropping their deadly payload indiscriminately.   Tragically, one of the bombs struck the Bijou directly, causing significant damage and though she was set adrift to try to save her, the once working boat was too damaged and she sunk to the mud below the River Stour, where she remains to this day.
